Statement on Ladder Positions

13 Aug 2019 by Rob Klemm

I have been writing and talking to FIDA and AFL Vic about our Div 1 ladder position for about a week, and especially since we won the Round 10 game on Sunday.
The rules for establishing ladder positions for finals used to be worked out by percentage (Points For divided by Points Against x 100). AFL Vic rules came in a couple of years ago, and now when 2 teams are on equal wins, the winner of the most recent match goes higher on the ladder.
In our Div 1, because we finished on 22 points like Mt Waverley, the rule goes back to the previous match against Mt Waverley. This was the game that was drawn due to injury. AFL Vic has ruled that it then goes back to the previous game between the two clubs, which was Round 1 when we lost to Mt Waverley by 7 points. So we have been a bit unlucky, but I am going to try to have the rule changed for next year so that percentage becomes a bigger part of the ladder, at least for Div 1.
One of the most important things about the way we play football at Williamstown is that we accept the Umpire’s decision. We don’t always agree, but we get on with the game and don’t argue. This is exactly the same. If we are going to be Premiers this year, we will have to beat Kananook, who have been the best team all year. It doesn’t matter if we have to do it this week or next week.
