Round 2 Part 2.1

29 Apr by Rob Klemm

The only FIDA clash on Sunday April 29 saw the Skye Bombers chalk up their inaugural win under their new name.
In great football weather, Williamstown started slowly and struggled to get the ball into their scoring zone in the first quarter. Then, while keeping the Bombers goalless for most of the second term, could only add a solitary major themselves.
Skye responded with 3 quick goals just before the half time siren.
The “Premiership Quarter” had the Red and Blacks with a strengthening breeze, but the Blue and Golds were able to outscore them by a point.
Williamstown came home with a wet sail in the last stanza, scoring 5.4 to 1.1, but it was not enough. A Corey Ballantine shot under pressure, hitting the post, was just one of a number of near misses.
In the end, Skye were deserving winners, but Williamstown can hold their heads high in playing the game right out to the end, with good attitude. It was pleasing to the leadership of both clubs that there were no behavioural issues and the whole day was entered into with “the FIDA spirit”.
Both of these teams will be serious contenders in the Finals. The re-match at The Fearon in July will be a feature.
Appropriately, the winners of the T.R.Y. medals were Kyle Bird and Kelvin O’Connor, who both showed skill, tenacity and sportsmanship throughout the entire match.
