Round 5 Match Reports

17 Jun by Rob Klemm

We welcomed two great FIDA clubs to The Fearon for Round 5 on Sunday June 15.
The games scheduled were:
C Grade Game – Williamstown vs Ferntree Gully.
A Grade Game – Williamstown v Skye.
The weather was an absolute delight – sunny and dry, if not warm, as can be seen from our pics from the huddles.
In the first game of the day, we saw Ferntree Gully arrive with only 11 players, due to injuries. Some generous Williamstown players agreed to pull on an Eagles jumper to get a match underway.
So, we saw the Gulls versus the Gullies in an entertaining display of C Grade football.
Seagulls Coaches Roger Curnow and Andrew West kept their unbeaten record alive with the Gully’s forfeit, despite the Willy team having a lower score on the scoreboard at the end of the game.
Ferntree Gully Eagles showed that when they get their full squad back together, they will take the challenge to many FIDA clubs.
It was great to have the assistance of Irish, Bel and Hannah from Willy Superules assisting on the bench as part of Women’s Coaching month.
The A grade game produced the game of the year thus far, with the Seagulls taking on top team Skye Bombers, who had had a comfortable win in the first match up in Round 1.
The re-match was to be a vastly different affair, with Willy having closer to a full line up.
It was neck and neck at quarter time, at 1.2 (8) apiece, and again at half time at 2.4 (16).
Williamstown kicked well with the difficult breeze and took a small lead in at the end of the third stanza, 4.7 (31) to 3.6 (24).
With the breeze in the final term, the Bombers battled hard to get level, and then with 2 minutes to go, took the lead with what looked like a match-winning major.
Williamstown was not to be denied, however, and with 80 seconds left, the Towners took the ball from the middle, and with 2 short accurate passes, found Damien Clark in front of goals but on the 50.
Responding to the pressure in the best way, Damo showed he is the Iceman, by nailing the kick into the win to level the scores at 5.9 (39).
There was jubilation from the Blue and Golds, as can be seen in the little video.
Skye Bombers have looked like they would be undefeated this year, but this result must give hope to other teams.
Thank you to all the people who set up and pack up. We can’t do it without you.

It’s Women’s Coaching Month.
