FIDA Life Membership
1 Mar by Rob Klemm
Congratulations to Raymond (“Burger”) Warren on being awarded Life Membership of FIDA, as a Player.
Ray first commenced playing in the FIDA competition as a young man, fresh out of school, with the Broadmeadows Kangaroos in 1999. He played with distinction with Broady until 2008, when he transferred to the Moonee Valley Magpies. As a dyed-in-the-wool Collingwood supporter, the lure of playing in the Black and White was too strong! When Moonee Valley folded in 2011, Ray transferred to Williamstown in 2012, where he has played ever since. I have had the pleasure of coaching him in 24 of the past 27 seasons, and he has always been a strong advocate for FIDA and its values, and has promoted them to both his team-mates and opposition players, with whom he is held in high regard and great respect.
A skilful player and an accurate kick, he had the opportunity to play Representative football in 2014 when he was selected to assist Tasmania, when they were short of players in the National Carnival held in Melbourne. He again acquitted himself creditably.
Having passed the age of 40, Ray knows that his best football is well behind him, but he was still selected to play in the Williamstown Seagulls Division 1 Premiership team in 2025, and kicked one goal one (1.1) from limited opportunities.
There have been several players in the past who have received Life Membership of FIDA, and having played well in excess of 250 games (FIDA games records are inexact), Ray would be a popular recipient among the FIDA playing group.
Burger will be at training this Wednesday at 4.30 at Seaholme PS, so you will be able to congratulate him, have your photo taken with him, and get his autograph too!
